Electra Varnava is a Cypriot artist whose practice has developed through a long engagement with drawing, observation and the human figure.
Born in Limassol, Cyprus, in 1988, Varnava began attending private art lessons at the age of ten. Encouraged by her mother, she participated in a number of youth art competitions, receiving distinctions from an early age. One of the most significant milestones of her childhood came in 2002 when, at the age of fourteen, she won a trip to Rome through a youth art competition organized by the Youth Board of Cyprus. During the same period, she received first prize in the Agros Youth Art Competition and continued to earn awards in national and European competitions.
Her first participation in a group exhibition took place in 2005 at the age of seventeen. The exhibition supported charitable causes, with part of the proceeds donated to charity. The event attracted notable public interest, including the attendance of the Minister of Justice and Public Order, who acquired one of her works.
In 2006, Varnava was awarded a scholarship by the Cyprus State Scholarship Foundation (IKY) and began her studies at the Department of Visual and Applied Arts of the School of Fine Arts at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. During her university years, she participated in several group exhibitions, including the 15th Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean – Symbiosis.
Following her graduation in 2011, she returned to Cyprus and established her own studio. Alongside the development of her personal artistic practice, she worked with students preparing portfolios for admission to art universities. During this period, her artistic interests increasingly focused on realism, observation and the structure of the human form.
Her first solo exhibition, ART VS CULTURE, was presented at Rouan Gallery in Limassol in 2014 and featured a series of graphite drawings. More than a decade later, in 2025, she presented her second solo exhibition, Atαξία – (P)HAOS, again at Rouan Gallery. The exhibition explored themes of order and disorder, as well as the relationship between the visible and the unseen.
Today, Electra Varnava continues to work from Cyprus, developing a body of work centered on drawing and portraiture while maintaining an ongoing exploration of realism as a contemporary artistic language.
